Why chemically blacken metal? It is not a lacquer or plating, but a thin black layer that, together with a post-treatment (usually oil or sealer), gives practical advantages: protection against rust, sleek appearance and smoothly working parts — without noticeable size change.

View the category metal blacks on the webshop here.

When do you choose black oxide?

Bolts, nuts, axles, dowel pins, guides

Tools & measuring instruments

Machine and equipment construction, automotive and assembly work

Aesthetic parts where thin, black and dimensionally stable are desired

Corrosion protection

The black layer in combination with oil/sealer protects metal parts from rust. Ideal for parts that are assembled or in stock.

Verzinkshop offers two sealers: Verzinkshop DeepSeal (oil-based) for durable protection indoors and outdoors, and Verzinkshop Acryl Sealer – a very thin, water-based lacquer without structure for a transparent finish very suitable for indoor projects.

Durable layer

Cold black oxidation is a conversion layer in the metal itself, so it does not chip or peel.
Does something get damaged? Touch-ups are simple: remove the sealer with a solvent and blacken again and you’re done. You don’t have to sand and you don’t see a transition between the old and new layer.

Smooth movement and assembly with an oil sealer

After blackening, there is usually a post-treatment with an oil-based sealer. This provides extra protection and ensures that parts rotate/slide more smoothly (guides, shafts, threads).
Metal on metal can eat into each other and damage each other during initial assembly or use. The black layer of oil acts as a thin lubricating film that sacrifices itself a bit with the first movement, so that the parts do not get stuck and work neatly together.

Dimensionally stable (practically no layer thickness)

Black oxidation hardly changes the size: about 0.10–0.25 μm (0.00010–0.00025 mm). Polished surfaces remain shiny and heat-treated parts retain their hardness. So you can simply finish critically fitting parts.

Aesthetics & less glare

The deep black color looks professional and provides a nice contrast with markings. The matte finish reduces glare, which is pleasant with tools and appliances.

Fast and cost-efficient

The process is fast and often cheaper than painting or galvanizing. Little to no drying time, parts can quickly proceed to assembly.

Why blacks (black oxidize)?
Black oxidation is a chemical conversion treatment for steel/iron (and for stainless steel with another liquid).
