The Caswell Black Oxide Kit is a complete set for easy and quick chemical blackening of steel and iron at room temperature. Original product: Caswell Black Oxide Kit

   

Features of the Black Oxide Kit

  • Complete package for steel and iron, room temperature process.
  • Suitable for hobbyists and small professionals, no special equipment required.
  • Works on cold and hot rolled steel/iron, structural steel, alloy and tool steel, cast iron and forged steel. Not suitable for stainless steel.
  • Sealer choice: Caswell Penetrating Sealer (oil) or Caswell Sealer (acrylic, water-based).
  • Clear manual included.

   

Key properties of Black Oxide

  • Starting mixing ratio: approx. 1:9 (10 percent concentrate in water). With a brush or sponge, 1:2–1:9 or undiluted can be used.
  • Process duration: Usually 2–5 minutes until the desired black depth is reached.
  • Sealing: required for corrosion protection and color retention. Caswell Sealer can be diluted 1:1 with water for a thin, structureless layer.
  • No noticeable size change, suitable for precision parts.

Using the Black Oxide Kit

  1. Mix the concentrate with water according to the instructions.
  2. Degrease and clean thoroughly with a suitable degreaser.
  3. Dip for 2–5 minutes or work with brush/sponge until desired color is achieved.
  4. Rinse in a designated container, not under the tap.
  5. Immediately apply the chosen sealer while the surface is still wet and let it dry.

  • Is sealing mandatory? Yes, for steel/iron always seal for corrosion protection.
  • Can I use this on stainless steel? No, use the Stainless Steel Chemical Black Kit for that.
  • What is the difference with Mega Black? Mega Black usually gives an even darker final colour at similar process time.
