Caswell plating USA Black nickel electrolyte for a very nice black layer of nickel

Black Nickel Electrolyte – Caswell Black Nickel

With Caswell Black Nickel electrolyte, you give parts an adjustable dark nickel finish, from transparent smoke gray to deep black. Perfect for fittings, hardware, instrument parts and decorative metals. The electrolyte is ready-to-use and makes it possible to quickly achieve the desired visual effect without complex process steps.

Black nickel works on a variety of materials such as nickel, copper, brass, tin, steel, stainless steel and zinc. By adjusting time and flow, you determine the intensity of the color. Over zinc, the darkest shades are achieved. The solution is user-friendly and suitable for both small series and detail work.

The electrolyte is available in:

  • 1 liter
  • 2 liters
  • 5 litres

Properties of the black nickel electrolyte

  • Can be applied to nickel, copper, brass, tin, steel, zinc and stainless steel
  • For cast soft metal, first treat with Caswell Flash Copper™
  • The process uses nickel anodes: nickel anode
  • Very low current required: 0.015 amperes per 10 cm² of object surface
  • Glazing agent: n/a
  • Works at room temperature, color can be deepened by the settings and time
  • The nickel comes from the anodes and these need to be replaced when they run out

Technical specifications

  • Recommended current density: 0.015 amps per 10 cm²
  • Anodes: nickel
  • Works on: nickel, copper, brass, tin, steel, stainless steel, zinc
  • Glazing agent: n/a
  • Time: 2 to 10 minutes or longer for a more solid color
  • Agitation: pump or air
  • Operating Range Temperature: 21 – 45 degrees Celsius
  • Temperature optimal: 40 – 45 degrees Celsius

Setting up the bath and nickel plating it yourself

Finishing parts with black nickel yourself with this electrolyte is easy.

  1. Fill a suitable plastic or glass tank with the Black Nickel electrolyte
  2. Hang two nickel anodes in the bath and turn on agitation with pump or air
  3. Operates at 21 degrees – optimal temperature is 40 to 45 degrees Celsius
  4. Connect the red plus wire of the power supply to the anodes and leave the power supply off
  5. Attach the workpiece to a stick resting on the edge of the bath, dip it in the electrolyte and connect the black minus wire to the workpiece
  6. Measure the surface to be nickel-plated and set the power supply to 0.015 amps per 10 cm², the process will now start

What is Caswell Black Nickel Electrolyte

Black nickel is a nickel electrolyte that allows you to electrolytically apply an adjustable smoke gray to black nickel layer. With the help of a power supply, the metal is deposited from the solution for a decorative dark finish. A power supply is required for this process.
