Caswell Black Oxide Properties

Blackening or browning metal yourself is easy with Caswell Black Oxide concentrate. The treatment works at room temperature in plastic containers and gives an even black result within seconds to minutes. Suitable for professional and hobby use.

Delivers a high-quality, uniform finish with no noticeable dimensional change, ideal for precision parts. Also suitable for larger panels and furniture for a consistent look. The final color can be controlled by adjusting the mixing ratio.

Distilled water not included. Demineralized or tap water can also be used, read more about different types of water. The prepared liquid can be stored in a sealed container for later reuse.

Which Caswell Black Oxide Liquid Do I Need

Caswell offers two options for cold black oxidation of ferrous metals such as steel and iron, Caswell Black Oxide and Caswell Mega Black. Both are suitable for room temperature processes, Mega Black usually gives a darker final tone.

Protecting the Caswell Black Oxide layer

Black oxide in itself has limited anti-corrosion. Protect the layer with a water-repellent sealer such as Caswell Penetrating Sealer or Caswell Sealer. Alternatives are beeswax, linseed oil or a clear coat, depending on the application and desired appearance.

Parts can oxidize further when the black oxide layer comes into contact with oxygen without protection.
