Properties of the zinc electrolyte

• With zinc polish, the standard cadmium look gets a very bright finish
• Zinc can be applied to steel, iron, cast metal, zinc, nickel, copper, brass, bronze, gold and silver
• Use of zinc anodes
• Current density 0.15 amps per 10 cm²
• Works at room temperature
• The zinc comes from the anodes and these need to be replaced when they run out
• Long shelf life with proper maintenance

Galvanizing parts yourself – step-by-step plan

1. Prepare the countersink as described in the supplied manual
2. Hang two zinc anodes in the bath and connect them to the positive of the power supply
3. Clean the workpiece thoroughly and perform a water breakage test if necessary
4. Place the nylon rod on the bucket and hang the workpiece with copper wire in the electrolyte
5. Connect the minus of the power supply to the workpiece and make sure that plus and minus do not touch each other
6. Set the power supply to 0.15 amps per 10 cm² of workpiece area and start the process
7. After about 15 to 20 minutes, a zinc layer is formed. For a thicker layer, let the process run longer

Post-treatment

For extra corrosion protection and a beautiful tint, it can be treated with blue passivation after galvanizing. Optionally, the layer can also be finished in black with Black Oxide for Zinc.

What is galvanizing or galvanizing

Electrolytic galvanizing is the application of a protective zinc layer that first oxidizes and thus shields the base metal against corrosion. With a power supply, current runs via zinc anodes and the electrolyte to the workpiece, causing zinc to deposit on the surface.
