Properties of the black nickel electrolyte

• Can be applied to nickel, copper, brass, tin, steel, stainless steel (stainless steel) and zinc (darkest shades on zinc)
• Very low current density: 0.015 A per 10 cm² of object surface
• Glazing agent: N/A
• Works at room temperature; for consistent, deep dark shades, 40–45 °C is preferable
• The nickel comes from the anodes and these need to be replaced when they run out
• Long shelf life with proper maintenance
• For cast soft metal, first treat with Caswell Flash Copper™

Nickel plating parts yourself – step-by-step plan

1. Prepare the bath as described in the supplied manual and fill the tank with Black Nickel electrolyte
2. Hang two nickel anodes in the bath, turn on agitation (pump or air)
3. If desired, bring the bath to 40–45 °C for a deeper, uniform dark shade (room temperature also works)
4. Connect the positive (red) of the power supply to the anodes and leave the power supply off
5. Hang the workpiece on the nylon rod in the electrolyte and connect the negative (black) of the power supply to the workpiece
6. Measure the surface to be treated and set the power supply to 0.015 A per 10 cm²; Start the process
7. Check the color: 2–10 minutes for smoke gray to deep black; longer and/or higher flow gives more intense hue

Tip: Due to the low current density, you can treat relatively large parts with a compact power supply (e.g. ±650 cm² requires ~1 A).
