Waste treatment and regulations for the use of chemical products

Various chemical products are often used in electroplating, electroforming, or chemical treatment of metals, such as electrolytes, conductive paints, patinas, activators, and sealers. All these substances can produce residual liquids or rinse water that may not simply be discharged into the sewer. read more about Waste treatment and chemical product regulations below.

Why these products are not allowed in the sewer

Many chemicals contain acids, bases or metals that can be harmful to the environment or water treatment. In the Netherlands, therefore, both individuals and companies must dispose of these liquids in a responsible manner. Each product may have different rules depending on its composition. For private individuals, the practice is usually simple: hand it in at the recycling center as small chemical waste (RCA). Stricter rules apply to companies.

What to do with residual liquids and rinse water

  • Never pour chemical liquids into the sink, toilet or cistern
  • Collect rinse water in sealable jerry cans or buckets
  • Hand in residues as small chemical waste (RCA) at the recycling center (for private individuals)
  • As a company, have the waste collected by an authorized collector
  • If in doubt, check whether discharge is permitted via the Environment Desk

For companies and the self-employed

  • Check via the Environment Desk whether you need a notification or permit: omgevingsloket.nl
  • Read the guidelines for discharges on IPLO: iplo.nl
  • Contact your water board or municipality if you are unsure about your situation
  • Always document which products you use and what you have disposed of

For private users

  • Hand in all chemical residues, including rinse water, to the recycling center as RCA
  • Keep different types of liquids separate
  • Only use the amount you need, so you avoid unnecessary waste

General tips

  • Use small amounts per session
  • If possible, let rinse water evaporate (if allowed)
  • Reuse baths where possible
  • Use double sinks to save water and waste

For customers outside the Netherlands

Environmental legislation is different in every country. Always check the local rules for disposing of chemical products or wastewater. The information on this page is based solely on the Dutch situation.
