Chemically blackening steel and iron with Verzinkshop Black Oxide Gel for steel and iron

Steel Chemical Blackening With Black Metal Oxide Gel

Black Oxide Gel for metal is ideal for chemically blackening large or vertical steel and iron objects. The gel prevents dripping and makes it possible to easily treat surfaces with a sponge or brush. Due to the slower effect, you have more control over the process and achieve a beautiful black patina result.

Available in:

  • 250 ml
  • 500 ml
  • 1000 ml

Features of Black Metal Oxide Gel

  • Gives a patina-like natural effect.
  • Specially developed for large and vertical metal objects.
  • Easy to apply with a sponge, cloth or brush.
  • Slower action than liquid black oxide concentrates for better process control.
  • Works at room temperature and gives a black patina finish.
  • Ideal for restoring damaged black oxide coatings.
  • Guideline value coverage approximately 2.5 m² per liter of gel.
  • Sealing after rinsing is mandatory for corrosion protection.
  • Not suitable for stainless steel, use Verzinkshop Black Stainless Steel Oxide Gel.

Black Metal Oxide Gel Product Information

This gel causes a chemical conversion of the steel surface, creating a black oxide layer. This layer must always be finished with a sealer to prevent further oxidation.

This process does not change the dimensions of the metal and is therefore ideal for precision parts. The gel works slower than a liquid concentrate, so you can achieve an even finish in a controlled manner.

Black Metal Oxide Gel is perfect for applications where submersion is not possible, such as blackening large frames, machinery, decorative metal panels and furniture.

Blacken your own steel and iron with Verzinkshop Black Metal Oxide Gel

  1. Cleaning: degrease the object with alcohol, acetone or an industrial degreaser, no oily products. Leave on for 1–3 minutes.
  2. Rinse: wipe the surface with a damp cloth or rinse it lightly. If an even film of water does not remain, repeat the cleaning.
  3. Remove rust: Use steel wool, sandpaper, or blast the surface to remove rust.
  4. Blacken: apply the gel with a sponge or brush and rub in lightly for 1–3 minutes. Reapply gel if necessary for a deeper color.
  5. Rinse: remove the gel completely with a damp sponge or cloth to prevent rusting.
  6. Drying: dry the surface with a cloth or a hot air gun, no compressed air to avoid stains.
  7. Sealing: apply a sealer to prevent oxidation.

Advantages of Cold Chemical Blackened Steel

  • Corrosion protection: the black layer provides basic protection against rust.
  • Improved appearance: gives a beautiful black surface without affecting the dimensions.
  • Easy application: no specialist equipment required.

Frequently asked questions about black oxide gel

  • Can I use the gel again? No, the gel is a one-time product. After use, it must be removed. What remains in the jar can be stored for about a year.
  • Is the black layer rust resistant? Without a sealer, the layer will oxidize on contact with air and moisture.
  • Why doesn’t my steel turn black properly? Some types of steel require activation with Verzinkshop Metal Activator or a short acidic pickling bath, for example 15% sulfuric acid, for optimal results.

Removing the passive layer of hardened steel

Some hard steels do not respond well to the treatment and remain light gray instead of black. This is due to the composition of the metal. In that case, the steel must be activated with Verzinkshop Metaal Activator or an etching bath with, for example, 15% sulphuric acid. Submerge the object for a few seconds to a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly in a designated container.

Effectively does what we were promised: leave a beautiful dark/variegated “patina” on our metal sculptures (instead of uniform coverage)
