Properties of the nickel electrolyte

• Nickel can be applied to steel, iron, nickel, copper, brass, bronze, gold, and silver
• The process uses nickel anodes: nickel anode
• Directedness guideline: 0.1 ampere per 10 cm²
• Uses nickel brightener for a clear finish (at start-up and periodic refill)
• Works at room temperature; Optimal finish at 43 °C
• Long shelf life with proper maintenance (refill brightener, replace anodes when they run out)
• Too acidic for cast soft metal – treat with Caswell Flash Copper™ first

Nickel plating parts yourself – step-by-step plan

1. Prepare the nickel bath as described in the supplied manual
2. Hang two nickel anodes in the bath and connect them to the plus of the power supply
3. Clean the workpiece thoroughly and perform a water breakage test if necessary
4. Place the nylon rod on the bucket and hang the workpiece with copper wire in the electrolyte
5. Connect the minus of the power supply to the workpiece and make sure that plus and minus do not touch each other
6. Set the power supply to 0.1 amps per 10 cm² of workpiece area and start the process
7. Target times/layer thickness: 15–30 min ≈ 0.006 mm; 30–60 min ≈ 0.0125 mm; 60–90 min ≈ 0.025 mm

Show chrome result

For a showroom-like chrome sheen, nickel is applied to a polished copper underlayment and then chrome-plated. This multi-layer construction (copper → nickel → chrome) provides extra depth and excellent protection.
