What is Electroplating?

What is electroplating, or electroplating, is an electrochemical process that applies a thin layer of metal to another metal by means of electrolyte and electricity. This protects metals from corrosion and at the same time provides an attractive finish. The purpose of electroplating is not only to extend the life of the metal, but also to give it a beautiful, shiny appearance. Due to the different techniques, such as galvanizing, nickel plating and copper plating, it is possible to give metal a new look, which makes it ideal for decorative applications.

The special feature of zinc electroplating

Zinc galvanizing is a special technique because of the unique properties of zinc. Zinc’s sacrificial properties make it an excellent choice for corrosion protection. This means that, when zinc is applied to a metal surface, the zinc will oxidize before the underlying metal is affected. This keeps the base metal intact for longer and at the same time protects it from external influences.

How does electroplating work?

The galvanization process involves applying a thin layer of another metal to the surface of the metal to be treated. This is usually done by electrolysis, in which the metal to be electroplated acts as the cathode and the metal to be used acts as the anode. In an electrolytic solution, the metal ions are displaced and adhere to the surface of the metal, creating a durable and protective layer. This layer not only helps to protect the metal but also gives it an attractive finish.

What is electrolyte?

Electrolyte is a conductive liquid that is required for electroplating. It contains dissolved ions that are essential for electrolysis. There are different types of electrolytes that can be used, depending on the desired result. Some examples are:

Application of electroplating to various metals

Electroplating can be done with different metals. Verzinkshop offers various types of electrolyte:

Zinc

Zinc provides excellent protection against corrosion and is a sacrificial metal, meaning it will decay sooner than the underlying metal. This protects the base metal from wear.

Nickel

Nickel provides strong corrosion protection and a beautiful glossy finish, ideal for applications where both appearance and durability are important.

Copper

Copper is known for its good conductivity and attractive appearance, and is often used in both decorative and functional applications.

Bronze

Bronze, a combination of copper and pewter, for very beautiful antique finishes.

Chromium

Chrome offers a strong, durable finish and is ideal for decorative applications.

There are also complete kits available: galvanization kits.

Chemical blackening in 5 steps

Chemically blackening metal in 5 steps.

By default, you work with five steps: cleaning (degreaser) → rinsing → blacks → rinsing → sealing.
Only with difficult steel do you add an activation + extra rinsing step (then it is 7 steps).
