Metal Chemical Blackening With Verzinkshop Black Oxide Concentrate

Verzinkshop Black Oxide Concentrate is a high-quality solution for chemically blackening steel and iron at room temperature. It delivers a durable, black finish that performs as well as traditional hot black oxide processes, without affecting the dimensions of the object. It is perfect for precision parts and can be applied quickly in just 2 to 5 minutes. The product is designed for easy application of a black oxide layer and contains milder substances compared to other black oxide products. Suitable for nuts and bolts, steel furniture and panels, restoration projects or protecting tools and metal parts. In combination with a sealer, a black oxide finish provides extra protection against rust and a very unique look.

Key properties of Black Oxide

  • coverage ≈ 10 m² per liter of concentrate (≈ 2.0 m² per 200 ml)
  • Safer to use than similar products from other suppliers by using milder chemicals.
  • Works on cold and hot rolled iron and steel, structural steel, alloy steel, tool steel, cast iron, forged steel and even sterling silver. Not suitable for stainless steel.
  • The process usually takes 2 to 3 minutes, up to 5 minutes.
  • Must be finished with a sealer, preferably while the surface is still wet.
  • Mixing ratio: Start with 1:9 (1 part concentrate to 9 parts water). Adjust if necessary: 1:6 (stronger) or 1:12 (thinner). With a brush/sponge, 1:2–1:9 or undiluted can be used. Read more about the use of different types of water here.

Features of Verzinkshop Black Oxide Concentrate

Blacken metal with this professional product available for the professional and hobbyists.

  • Verzinkshop Black Oxide is a traditional cold black oxide system for blackening iron and steel at room temperature.
  • Can be mixed in different proportions for different results.
  • Apply by immersion, a brush or sponge.
  • Does not affect the dimensions of the object, ideal for precision parts!
  • The product uses mild chemicals that can be diluted with water and work at room temperature.

Protecting chemically blackened metal and the black oxide layer

It is important to remember that a black oxide conversion coating on metal does not offer high anti-corrosion properties on its own. Without a sealer, the coating will quickly oxidize further in contact with moisture and oxygen.

The corrosion resistance is achieved by applying a water-repellent sealer such as:

Chemical blackening of metal with Galvanizing Black Oxide Concentrate

This product works very well on structural steel and well-cleaned steel plates and parts for interior finishes. It meets the standards of the Living Building Challenge Red List: an international sustainable building certification program.

Follow the steps to get a very even black oxide finish on metal:

  1. Light the Verzinkshop Black Oxide liquid in a designated plastic or glass container as described in the manual.
  2. Make sure that the object to be treated is free of dirt and grease. If necessary, treat the object with an activator and rinse it thoroughly.
  3. Immerse the part in the Verzinkshop Black Oxide and stir it occasionally until the desired result is achieved. For large objects, a brush or sponge can be used.
  4. Rinse the part in a designated container (not under the tap) and finish it directly with a sealer of your choice without drying the object. Do not use compressed air to dry.
  5. Ready! The object can now be handled and used.

Frequently asked questions about black oxide products

The liquid can be stored in a sealed container for several months to be reused. If it doesn’t work as well, you can always reactivate it by adding a small amount of concentrate.

The black oxide finish is not rust-resistant by itself and cannot be applied without a sealer. The black oxide is a controlled oxide layer that will oxidize further if no protective layer is applied to it.

This product does not work on stainless steel, use the Verzinkshop Black Stainless Steel Oxide kit.

    (translated)

Despite the fact that this is concentrate, I had to repeat 3 times for the desired effect. Could also be me because iron may still have been a bit greasy despite degreasing with acetone.
