Metal Chemical Blackening Kit With Sealer
A complete kit and a simple and effective way to quickly chemically blacken and protect steel and iron with a traditional cold black oxide process. The Verzinkshop Metal Chemical Blacken Kit contains everything you need, including a sealer of your choice (Acrylic, DeepSeal or Uni) for protection of the black oxide conversion coating and the metal. This chemical blackening kit has been developed for metal chemical blackening at room temperature. With this set you can blacken iron and steel and finish them evenly with a conversion coating.
Contents of the Black Oxide Kit
Do you need an activator or etching agent for metal? Then order along: Verzinkshop Metal Activator.
Do you use hydrochloric acid as an etching agent? Then use the Black Oxide Ultra Kit.
Features of the Black Oxide Chemical Blacks Kit
Blackening steel and iron is very easy with this kit.
- Complete package for chemical blackening of steel and iron (room temperature process).
- Suitable for hobbyists and small professionals, no special equipment required.
- Works on cold and hot rolled steel and iron, structural steel, alloy and tool steel, cast iron and forged steel, not suitable for stainless steel.
- Sealer Choice: Acrylic Metal Sealer, DeepSeal Metal Sealer or Uni Metal Sealer.
- Guideline value coverage: ≈ 2 m² per 2 liters of liquid mixed.
Key properties of Black Oxide
- Starting mixing ratio: 1:9 (1 part concentrate to 9 parts water), adjust if necessary (e.g. 1:6 or 1:12). With a brush or sponge, 1:2–1:9 or undiluted can be used. Read more about the right type of water.
- Usually dip for 2–5 minutes until the desired color black is achieved.
- Rinse in a designated container and seal directly while the surface is still wet, do not use compressed air to dry.
- No noticeable size change, suitable for precision parts.
Sealer choice: Acrylic, DeepSeal or Uni Sealer
- Acrylic Metal Sealer – water-based, clear and hard, glossy, structureless layer with very low VOC, ideal for indoor use.
- DeepSeal Metal Sealer – oil-based, water-expelling, dry-to-the-touch with very light oil film, deepens the black and gives a classic look.
- Uni Metal Sealer – oil base with a fuller or greasier final finish, gives a slightly richer shine and black depth and is easy to touch-up.
Using the Black Oxide Kit
It is wise to first do a test, as described in the manual, to arrive at the correct mixing ratio for your specific metal. This will prevent you from diluting the liquid too much when a stronger ratio is needed.
- Mix the water and the Black Oxide Concentrate in the supplied bucket according to the instructions (standard 1:9).
- Degrease and clean the metal thoroughly, perform a water breakage test if necessary, and etch or activate if necessary.
- Submerge the part (or work with a brush or sponge) and move lightly until the desired color is achieved (usually 2–5 minutes).
- Rinse in a designated container (not under the tap) and immediately apply the chosen sealer while the surface is still wet.
- Let dry. If desired, continue treatment in accordance with the sealer manual.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does the liquid last? Several months in a sealed container (depending on hygiene, load and maintenance).
- Is a sealer necessary? Yes, for corrosion protection and color retention, sealing is highly recommended, choose DeepSeal, Uni or Acrylic depending on the desired finish.
- Can I use this to blacken stainless steel? No, this kit is for iron and steel. For stainless steel you use the Stainless Steel Chemical Black Kit.
